Tesla Model Y India launch: First unit arrives at $69,770 – key facts
Tesla has officially rolled into India and it’s making a bold entrance. The company is launching its Model Y in the country, with prices starting at $69,770, making it the most expensive market for the car globally. That’s right even more than the U.S., China, or Germany.
Tesla’s first showroom in India opened on Tuesday in Mumbai. It was a media-packed affair, with tight security, and even the Chief Minister of Maharashtra showing up for the launch. Inside, Tesla kept its classy minimalistic interiors, signature neutral tones, and the Model Y covered in black and grey wraps, only partly visible through glass panels. No fans or general public were allowed inside and access was strictly controlled.
A Premium Strategy for a Premium Market
The version coming to India is the rear-wheel drive Model Y, and according to Tesla’s website, its on-road price in Mumbai is 6.1 million rupees. To book one, you’ll need to drop a 22,220 rupees deposit.
Instead of setting up a local factory right away, Tesla is going with a strategy of selling imported cars despite the fact that India imposes import duties of around 70%. So yeah, it’s not cheap but Tesla clearly isn’t aiming for the mass-market just yet.
Its focus? A small, high-end premium EV segment, which currently makes up only about 4% of India’s overall car sales. So rather than going head-to-head with Tata Motors or Mahindra, Tesla is setting its sights on big-name rivals like BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
There’s also a long-range rear-wheel drive Model Y, priced at 6.8 million rupees.
- Tesla is offering its “Full Self-Driving (FSD) capability” for an additional 600,000 rupees.
- The system currently requires active driver supervision and is not fully autonomous yet.
- Tesla plans to improve the feature continuously through over-the-air software updates, moving closer to true self-driving.
Tesla’s not just testing the waters it’s diving into the Indian market with a premium product and premium pricing. Whether India’s luxury EV buyers are ready to ride along, we’ll soon find out.
Why the high price?
The steep pricing mainly comes down to India’s hefty import duties and taxes, which can add up to about “70%” on top of the car’s original price. Since Tesla hasn’t set up a local manufacturing plant yet, it relies entirely on imports making the Model Y significantly more expensive here than in other countries.
Tesla’s competition in India
Tesla isn’t competing with mass-market EV makers like Tata Motors or Mahindra. Instead, it’s targeting the premium electric vehicle segment, going head-to-head with luxury brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz, which already have a strong foothold among India’s affluent buyers.
