Trump Announces Wealthy Group Set to Buy TikTok
President Donald Trump announced that a group of “very wealthy people” is lined up to buy TikTok, the popular short-form video app owned by China’s ByteDance. While he did not disclose the identities of the prospective buyers, Trump expressed confidence that the deal is moving forward, though it would likely require approval from Chinese authorities.
Trump said.
“We have a buyer for TikTok, by the way.I think I’ll probably need China’s approval. I think President Xi will probably do it.”
He also promised to reveal more details about the buyers in two weeks, a timeline he has referenced multiple times before.
Ongoing Negotiations Amid Regulatory Challenges
Since ByteDance is a Chinese company, any sale involving TikTok’s U.S. operations depends heavily on Beijing’s consent. Trump’s comments indicate ongoing, though undisclosed, negotiations but the nature and progress of these talks remain unclear.
Earlier this year, Trump proposed a joint venture arrangement, suggesting that the United States could secure up to 50% ownership in TikTok as a compromise to ease national security concerns. He also mentioned notable figures such as Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison and Tesla CEO Elon Musk as possible buyers, although Musk’s involvement appears less likely now.
TikTok continues to face intense scrutiny from U.S. lawmakers over data privacy and potential influence from the Chinese government. The platform’s future in the American market remains uncertain amid political tensions and security debates.
As the clock ticks, all eyes are on the upcoming weeks to see if Trump’s promise of a TikTok sale materializes or if the deal will fall through under regulatory or diplomatic pressure. For now, TikTok’s vast U.S. user base remains caught in the middle of a high-stakes geopolitical showdown. The outcome of this deal could reshape the future of social media in the U.S., impacting millions of users and setting a precedent for how tech companies navigate international relations.
