Apple App Store generates $1.3 trillion in sales and billings in 2024, with 90% commission-free transactions.

Apple reveals its App Store facilitated $1.3 trillion in global billings and sales in 2024, highlighting significant growth in digital goods, physical services, and in-app advertising.

In a bold move ahead of its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 9, Apple just dropped some jaw-dropping numbers about its App Store and they reveal just how massive and far-reaching the platform has become.

According to the latest update shared on Thursday, developers using Apple’s App Store generated a staggering $1.3 trillion in billings and sales during 2024. What’s even more surprising? Apple emphasized that “90% of those billings and sales did not involve paying Apple a commission.”

This isn’t just about apps selling virtual coins or subscriptions anymore the App Store has become the engine behind a global digital economy.

Where Did the $1.3 Trillion Come From?

The Apple-funded study, conducted by Professor Andrey Fradkin from Boston University and Dr. Jessica Burley from the Analysis Group, broke it down like this:

  • $131 billion came from digital goods and services including booming categories like mobile games, photo editing, video tools, and business apps.
  • A jaw-dropping $1 trillion was driven by physical goods and services, such as food delivery, grocery apps, and pickup services showing how real-world commerce now lives on mobile.
  • Another $150 billion came from in-app advertising, highlighting how brands are leveraging the App Store’s vast reach.

Since 2019, spending in these three categories digital goods/services, physical goods/services, and advertising has more than doubled. Apple said “physical goods and services saw the strongest growth at more than 2.6 times.”

A Platform That Goes Beyond In-App Purchases

Apple is using this data to prove a bigger point: the App Store isn’t just about in-app purchases anymore. It’s now a powerful business hub where developers can build and scale companies thanks to Apple’s global infrastructure, discovery system, developer tools, analytics and support systems.

Apple says the App Store attracts “813 million average weekly visitors worldwide” offering developers not just visibility, but a real shot at success.

But Not Without Controversy

While Apple celebrates this milestone, critics argue that the App Store is now a “mature ecosystem” and that developers should have more freedom to manage their apps and payments independently.

That pressure is working. In a recent U.S. court ruling in favor of Epic Games, Apple was ordered to allow developers to “link to their own websites for processing in-app purchases without having to pay Apple a commission.”

In Europe, Apple is also facing new demands under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which forces it to “give developers the right to inform their customers about alternative payment mechanisms.”

Global Growth Surging

The report further showed that App Store facilitated sales have more than doubled in the past five years in key regions like the U.S., China and Europe.

Even more striking: “Digital payment spending… grew by more than seven times in the U.S. since 2019,” driven by a surge in mobile payments and shifting consumer behavior.

Apple’s Investments Behind the Scenes

To support this explosive ecosystem, Apple has poured resources into building out a solid foundation offering developers everything from coding and distribution platforms, to anti-fraud systems, analytics and developer support.

This latest study may have been Apple-funded, but the numbers speak for themselves. The App Store isn’t just a digital storefront, it’s a multi-trillion-dollar force reshaping how we live, shop, advertise, and connect.
