Apple COO Jeff Williams to Retire—Major Shift Ahead for the Company
Apple recently announced that Jeff Williams, their longtime Chief Operating Officer, will retire later this year. Williams has been with Apple for 27 years and brings over 40 years of experience in the tech industry.
Williams played a key role in launching the Apple Watch, leading health initiatives, and taking charge of Apple’s design team after Jony Ive left in 2019. Until his retirement, he will continue managing the design, health, and Apple Watch teams, reporting directly to CEO Tim Cook.
Williams shared:
“June marked my 27th anniversary with Apple and my 40th in the industry.” He also mentioned his plan to spend more time with family and friends after stepping down.
Taking over much of Williams’ responsibilities will be Sabih Khan, Apple’s current operations leader. Khan has been at Apple since 1995 and joined the executive team in 2019. He’ll now oversee supply chain, procurement, planning, product quality, and fulfillment.
Before Apple, Khan worked as an engineer and technical leader at GE Plastics. He holds a bachelor’s from Tufts University and a master’s in mechanical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Known for being hands-on, he once flew to China immediately after Tim Cook flagged a manufacturing issue as “really bad” to fix it himself.
Williams’ retirement comes as Apple faces supply chain challenges, especially with new U.S. tariffs starting August 1 that affect several countries involved in Apple’s production.
CEO Tim Cook praised Williams:
“He’s helped to create one of the most respected global supply chains in the world; launched Apple Watch and overseen its development; architected Apple’s health strategy; and led our world class team of designers with great wisdom, heart, and dedication.”
After Williams leaves, Apple’s design team will report directly to Cook marking a shift in leadership structure.
What Could This Mean for Apple?
Losing a leader like Jeff Williams is a big change. He’s been deeply involved in major projects and operations, so his absence might initially shake things up. The design team now reporting to Tim Cook means Cook will have more direct control over product development, which could bring new directions or ideas.
