OpenAI and Anthropic may help Apple reinvent Siri amid development delays

OpenAI and Anthropic may help Apple reinvent Siri features

Apple is exploring a big change in its artificial intelligence strategy by using outside technology. The company might use tools from OpenAI or Anthropic to power a redesigned Siri. A Bloomberg report published on Monday shared this news about the shift. This marks a major move away from Apple’s usual reliance on its own internal AI models.

People familiar with the matter say Apple has started talks with both companies. Apple asked them to customize their large language models for testing on Apple’s own cloud systems. Even though these talks are underway, Apple has not yet made a final decision.

Apple shares were trading lower earlier in the day, but they reversed course and closed up 2% following the news.

Leadership Changes Reflect Siri’s Struggles

Apple stated in March that major upgrades to Siri’s AI would be delayed until 2026. The company did not offer any clear explanation for this long delay. In response to repeated setbacks, Apple reorganized the executive team overseeing its AI projects. CEO Tim Cook reportedly lost confidence in former AI chief John Giannandrea’s ability to deliver on product goals. Because of this, the company appointed Mike Rockwell to lead the Siri project.

Apple highlighted modest AI features at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this month. These new tools are designed to improve day-to-day tasks, such as live phone call translations. The company chose not to unveil sweeping advancements like those pursued by rivals Microsoft and Google.

Opening AI Tools to Developers

Craig Federighi is Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering. He announced that the company will begin opening parts of its foundational AI models to third-party developers. Additionally, Apple plans to offer both its proprietary and OpenAI-powered code completion tools within its core developer platforms.

Amazon-backed Anthropic declined to comment on these discussions with Apple. At the same time, Apple and OpenAI did not respond to requests for statements from Reuters.

If Apple moves ahead with this plan, it would signal a rare and important acknowledgment. The company may need external partners to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
