A catastrophic plane crash struck Ahmedabad when an Air India flight bound for London crashed moments after taking off. The aircraft, carrying 242 people, went down within 30 seconds of leaving the runway. Officials have confirmed that more than 200 lives were lost in this tragic accident, making it one of the deadliest aviation disasters in the last decade.
Survivor’s Story and On-Scene Details
One passenger survived the crash. Ramesh Viswashkumar, seated in 11A, described the terrifying moments after takeoff:
“There was a loud noise, and then the plane crashed. Everything happened so fast. When I regained consciousness, I was surrounded by bodies. I was scared and ran for safety.”
Ramesh was rushed to a hospital with injuries. His brother, traveling on a different seat, remains missing.
The plane crashed into a residential area close to the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital and the B.J. Medical College hostel, causing casualties not only among passengers but also on the ground. Pieces of the plane were scattered widely, and the tail section was found lodged on top of a building.
Aircraft Details and Flight Data
The plane involved was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, known for its advanced technology and modern design since its commercial launch in 2011. This crash marks the first fatal incident involving this aircraft model.
According to flight tracking, the aircraft took off at 1:39 pm from runway 23. The pilot sent a Mayday signal, indicating an emergency, but soon after, all communications ceased.
An aerospace safety expert pointed out that videos showed the landing gear still deployed after takeoff, an unusual sign that might indicate technical issues, as typically the landing gear is retracted soon after leaving the runway.
National Response and Support Efforts
The Indian government, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressed deep sorrow and vowed full support for rescue operations and victim families. The airline’s new owner, the Tata Group, pledged to cover medical expenses for the injured and provide financial aid to the families of the deceased.
Over 50 people are currently hospitalized, and authorities are conducting DNA tests to identify victims.
