Apple Eyes AI for Chip Design, Exec Reveals New Tech
Apple is gearing up to reshape the future of its hardware not just by building powerful chips, but by using generative artificial intelligence (AI) to design them faster and smarter.
Johny Srouji, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Technologies, recently shared this exciting direction during a speech in Belgium. The address took place while he was being honored by Imec, a globally respected semiconductor research group. A recording of the event reviewed by Reuters confirms that Apple is now exploring AI tools to speed up its chip development process, a move that could redefine how its devices are engineered.
A Legacy of Bold Moves
Apple’s journey in chip design began with the A4 chip in the iPhone back in 2010. Today, its advanced custom chips drive everything from Mac desktops to the Vision Pro headset. According to Srouji, one of the biggest lessons Apple has learned is to always adopt the most advanced tools and now, that means turning to AI-powered chip design software.
Industry leaders like Cadence Design Systems and Synopsys have already begun integrating AI into their electronic design automation (EDA) tools. Srouji acknowledged their impact, stating:
“EDA companies are super critical in supporting our chip design complexities.”
“Generative AI techniques have a high potential in getting more design work in less time, and it can be a huge productivity boost.”
No Backup, Just Bold Decisions
Apple isn’t known for playing it safe. When it transitioned its entire Mac lineup from Intel processors to its own Apple Silicon in 2020, it made that leap without any contingency plan. Srouji reflected:
“Moving the Mac to Apple Silicon was a huge bet for us. There was no backup plan, no split-the-lineup plan, so we went all in, including a monumental software effort.”
What It Means Moving Forward
With generative AI now entering the mix, Apple is doubling down on its belief that innovation requires bold steps. If AI can help Apple create custom chips more efficiently, it could dramatically shorten development cycles and boost overall performance.
