Google to Offer Big Cloud Discounts to U.S. Government Agencies
In a significant move aligned with the U.S. government’s mission to reduce federal spending, Google is reportedly preparing to offer steep discounts on its cloud computing services for federal agencies. According to a Financial Times report on Friday, the deal could be finalized within weeks, marking a major development in the ongoing digital modernization efforts within the government sector.
This news surfaces at a time when President Donald Trump is pushing forward with broader fiscal reforms, aiming to cut down on excessive federal expenditures. As part of this effort, major technology firms are being encouraged to collaborate more closely with the government at reduced costs.
Oracle Sets the Benchmark Google to Follow
Last week, The Wall Street Journal revealed that Oracle (ORCL.N) would provide a 75% discount on its license-based software to federal agencies and also extend a “substantial” discount on its cloud services through the end of November. Following Oracle’s lead, Google’s offer is expected “to land in a similar spot,” the Financial Times cited, quoting a senior official from the General Services Administration (GSA).
“Every single one of those companies is totally bought in, they understand the mission. We will get there with all four players.”
This statement indicates that equivalent offers from Microsoft’s Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are likely to follow, completing a comprehensive set of discounted options from all major U.S. cloud providers.
Billions in Savings on the Horizon
Although Reuters has not independently verified the report, the pattern aligns with earlier developments. Back in April, Google had already agreed to offer a 71% discount on its business apps package for federal agencies through September 30. That move alone could save the government up to $2 billion if adopted nationwide.
