Google’s new Doodle becomes a showcase for its latest AI mode
Google has taken an unusual step by using its iconic homepage Doodle to spotlight its latest artificial intelligence search tool, AI Mode. Traditionally reserved for honoring cultural moments and historical figures, the Doodle this week was transformed into an animated banner that leads users straight to Google’s AI-powered search experience.
The change appeared on both the Chrome browser’s landing pages and Google’s main site, where visitors could click the image to explore AI Mode or share it directly. This high-visibility promotion signals how seriously Google is pushing its AI capabilities as competition from other tech giants intensifies.
Rising Pressure from Rivals
In recent months, Google has faced mounting pressure from a wave of AI-focused companies such as OpenAI, creators of ChatGPT Anthropic, which developed Claude and Perplexity AI known for its “AI-powered answer engine.” These startups have rapidly gained traction, challenging Google’s dominance in search and information retrieval.
A company spokesperson described the Doodle campaign as “just a fun promo” rather than part of Google’s usual commemorative illustrations. However, the timing highlights Google’s determination to familiarize users with its advanced AI offerings.
How AI Mode Works
AI Mode, powered by Google’s flagship Gemini model delivers chatbot-like assistance directly within search results. Launched in March, the feature enables users to type, speak, or upload images to ask complex questions and receive AI-generated responses in seconds.
When users click through the Doodle, they see the description:
“Search whatever’s on your mind and get AI-powered responses.”
Google says AI Mode makes it easier to uncover answers that might previously have required multiple searches or extra digging through links. In May, the company even tested placing AI Mode directly beneath the search bar replacing the familiar “I’m Feeling Lucky” button, a spot that rarely changes.
A Glimpse Into the Future of Search
This latest move underscores Google’s ambition to transform the way people find and consume information. By integrating generative AI more deeply into everyday search, Google hopes to stay ahead of rivals and redefine what it means to “Google” something.
While the company insists the promotion is temporary, it sends a clear message: AI isn’t an optional add-on anymore it’s becoming the centerpiece of how Google envisions the future of search.
