Tanks roared and helicopters sliced through the cloudy skies above Washington, DC, as thousands witnessed a historic and controversial display of power on June 14th, marking the 250th anniversary of the United States Army and, notably, the 79th birthday of President Donald Trump.
Dubbed by Trump as an unforgettable moment, the Trump birthday military parade stretched across the National Mall, adorned with 28 Abrams tanks, armored vehicles, vintage aircraft, and helicopters both modern and historic. For some, it was a tribute to patriotism. For others, it was a disturbing echo of authoritarian displays.
Every other country celebrates their victories. It’s about time America did, too, Trump told a sparse crowd as he looked out over Constitution Avenue, the symbolic route linking the White House to the US Capitol.
A Dual Celebration or a Power Play?
The Trump parade coincided with two significant dates: the Army’s founding in 1775, and Trump’s own birthday. Vice President JD Vance acknowledged the shared date, saying, “June 14th is, of course, the birthday of the army. It is, of course, the birthday of the president of the United States. Happy birthday, Mr President.”
The Trump birthday parade quickly stirred a national debate. Critics called it theatrical and unnecessary what one protester dubbed dictator behaviour. At Logan Circle, Marine veteran Terry Mahoney expressed his discontent: If you take everything else he’s done, stomping on the US Constitution, this parade may just be window dressing. But it’s the worst kind of window dressing.Yet supporters were excited. Taras Voronyy, who traveled from South Carolina, said,
“It’s a chance to celebrate the military, and also, Trump will be here. I was actually a little confused if it was supposed to be for the army’s 250th anniversary or for Trump’s birthday. So I guess it’s a twofer.”
Trump’s Long-Awaited Dream Parade
Trump has long admired grand military processions, especially after attending the Bastille Day parade in Paris in 2017. Though blocked during his first term, this time he went full scale with tanks, military jets, and cavalry marching through the heart of the capital. It was the largest display of military hardware in Washington since the Gulf War celebration in 1991.
Crowds in red MAGA hats lined the streets, though turnout fell short of military officials’ expectations of 200,000. Among the spectators was Freddie Delacruz, a 63-year-old veteran: It’s a coincidence. But we’re here to support the army. I spent 32 years in the army I want to see the tanks, the planes, the helicopters flying around.
Military Force Meets Political Power
Just days before the Trump birthday parade 2025, Trump deployed the National Guard to California in response to protests against ICE raids. California Governor Gavin Newsom sued, and a judge ruled the deployment illegal but an appeals court paused the decision, letting the Guard remain temporarily.
Trump’s move marked the first time since 1965 a president activated the National Guard without a governor’s approval. He also hinted at invoking the Insurrection Act of 1807, which would allow U.S. troops to act in domestic law enforcement.
Army veteran Aaron M., attending from Miami, defended Trump:
“If governors can’t get their states under control, then Look, I was born in Nicaragua. I came here when I was 12. I know what a dictator is. This is not a dictator.”
Resistance Echoes Across the Nation
Still, the celebrations sparked emotional reactions. Anahi Rivas-Rodriguez, 24, from McAllen, Texas, protested near the White House:“I do not stand by an America that tears families apart and targets people because they look brown and they look Mexican. because they look like me.
Trump had earlier dismissed protesters as people who hate the country and warned they would be “met with very big force. But Anahi replied boldly, “Protesting is patriotic, and I am here for my country because I care about America.
Roughly 60 arrests occurred during a Capitol protest Friday night, but Saturday saw no major incidents. The “No Kings” protest group chose to demonstrate in other cities, avoiding Washington to prevent making the Trump parade today the central spectacle.
“This Represents a Farce”
Vietnam War veteran Roland Roebuck, 77 voiced frustration:
Trump has been allergic to military service and deeply disrespectful of the military. He criticized the parade’s $25 to $45 million cost, especially as federal services and veteran support programs are being scaled back.
Roebuck also condemned the Trump administration’s rollback of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives in the military: Many of the people that are here are very confused with respect to what this parade represents. This represents a farce.
