iOS 18.6 lets you personalize your home screen for a fresh look
Apple just dropped iOS 18.6 and it is more than your usual update packed with bug fixes and security patches. Think of it as a quick refresh that can actually make your iPhone feel brand new faster, smarter, and way more personal. The best part? With just a few easy tweaks, you can supercharge your daily iPhone experience without any tech skills. Plus, you will be all set for the exciting iOS 26 coming next month!
After trying out the latest update, I discovered 10 simple settings that truly made a difference from boosting battery life to protecting your privacy and making everyday use smoother. And guess what? Most of these changes take less than a minute to set up.
Turn off categories in the Mail app
iOS 18 finally lets you customize the buttons at the bottom corners of your lock screen. Instead of just flashlight and camera, you can add shortcuts like Shazam, Dark Mode, Alarm, Airplane Mode, Wallet, and more:
- Touch and hold anywhere on the lock screen until Customize appears.
- Tap Customize > Lock Screen.
- Remove buttons with the – (minus) sign or add new ones by tapping the + icon.
- Tap Done to save.
Get important alerts using Prioritize Notifications
iOS 18.4 introduced Apple Intelligence to help prioritize your notifications. This smart feature flags important alerts from contacts and filters out less urgent ones, reducing clutter. Find it under Settings > Notifications > Apple Intelligence > Prioritize Notifications, and customize which apps get priority.
Set up new tasks on the Action button
For iPhone 15 Pro and later models, the Action button replaced the mute switch with customizable controls. You can hold it to mute, open the camera, or even perform multiple actions at once. The latest update adds AI-powered Visual Intelligence to enhance its abilities.
Go to Settings > Action Button to choose your preferred function.
Give your home screen a radical new look
iOS 18 lets you move app icons nearly anywhere on the grid, so your wallpaper is no longer hidden. Plus, you can now:
- Apply Dark Mode to the whole home screen, changing icons and backgrounds to darker shades.
- Tint all app icons with a color of your choice.
- Make icons larger and hide their labels.
Just long-press the home screen and tap Customize to explore these options.
Change how the Control Center looks
The Control Center is more flexible now. You can rearrange, resize, and add new controls like Screen Recording or accessibility options. Swipe down from the top-right and tap the + button to start customizing.
Lock or hide sensitive apps
Want extra privacy? iOS 18 lets you lock entire apps with Face ID or Touch ID, or hide them in a secure folder. Long-press an app icon to set this up perfect for Notes or apps with private info.
Turn off Loop Videos in Photos
If videos keep replaying automatically in the Photos app, you can stop this by going to Settings > Photos and turning off Loop Videos. This way, videos play once and then stop no need to keep hitting Pause.
Adjust your calendar view
Now in iOS 18, when viewing your calendar in Month mode, you can pinch to zoom and see events more clearly. There’s also a new Multi Day view in Day mode, showing two days side by side for better planning.
Improve movie and TV show dialogue
Struggling to hear what actors say? The TV app in iOS 18 offers Enhanced Dialogue options. Tap More (…) > Audio > Enhance Dialogue and choose between Enhance or Boost to reduce background noise and make voices clearer.
